Keeping costs down through modular product concepts: the most recent VDMA-Field Manual dubbed “Management of Variants” contains important tips for machine and industrial systems manufacturers on the subject of product configuration. The Stuttgart firm camos GmbH was responsible for significant aspects of its contents.
As early as the price quotation phase, machine and industrial systems manufacturers face the challenge of staying on top of a vast array of product variations. The management of variants is a procedure which helps find the quickest way to individual customer solutions at the lowest possible cost. In the end, the goal is to continue to offer the customer the largest possible spectrum of product variations. For that reason, the current update of the VDMA-Field Manual known as “Management of Variants” which the VDMA will introduce at a trade fair event in February is dedicated to an in-depth treatment of the theme of product configurators. It deals with the subject of "multi-functional, computer-assisted systems which operate as an interface between sales and all those functions intimately connected to value creation. It serves as an integrational tool for technical information, knowledge bases and task solving with the objective of supporting sales and task management effectively and efficiently,” as it is phrased in the field manual.
Generating price quotations with configuration software
If the tool is deployed as a configurator for purposes of generating price quotations, it accelerates the sales process enormously. It enables a company to generate price quotations for customer-devised and market-oriented products with amazing simplicity. Through the software, which operates on the basis of pre-set rules and guidelines, it can be ensured that machines and industrial systems are offered with technically correct specifications. Michael Hüllenkremer, Managing Director of camos, puts it this way: “For more than 25 years, we have focused our efforts on this specific issue. And we have been happy to contribute our expertise to the compilation of this field manual. Much too often, companies waste valuable resources through adjustments to a wide variety of constructions and specially manufactured products. That simply isn’t necessary. With this publication, the VDMA trumpets the message to the branch with the appropriate emphasis.” When the VDMA introduces this field manual in Oberursel near Frankfurt on 8 February 2012, camos will present its Configuration software at the exhibition accompanying the professional focal point presentation.
